Foot Health: 8 Key Tips for Maintaining Healthy Feet

1. Take Your Time When Washing Your Feet 

Most of us don’t take the time to bend down in the shower and properly clean our feet. 

However, while it’s easy to give in to the temptation to give your feet a quick once over when in the shower, you need to give them some extra love if you want healthy and happy feet. 

Your feet typically spend a good chunk of their day locked inside the confines of a damp, dark shoe that doesn’t have proper air circulation. This moist atmosphere can lead to fungus and bacteria growth if you’re not careful. 

To kill any potential foot fungi or bacteria, you should thoroughly wash your feet in the shower each day. Also, make sure that you properly dry your feet before you put your shoes on. 

Leaving your feet a little damp and then slipping on your shoes can cause a moist-environment that leads to bacteria. 

2. Wear the Right Shoes 

A big part of taking care of your feet means wearing the right shoes. 

If you wear shoes that are too tight, it can lead to long-term foot problems. To make sure you’re selecting the right size, shop for shoes at the end of the day. 

Typically, your feet will be slightly swollen after a day of working and walking around, and you want a shoe that can accommodate your foot in this swollen state. 

You should also try on shoes with the socks you plan to wear them with. 

Also, while wearing high heels occasionally won’t cause any damage, you should stick to wearing comfortable shoes for the majority of your day.

Research shows that women who wear high heels regularly typically suffer from ankle and foot problems because high heels transfer body weight to the balls of your feet. The balls of your feet aren’t meant to carry that much weight, which is why problems arise. 

In fact, one study conducted by the Institute of Aging Research of Hebrew SeniorLife found that 64 percent of women who reported pain in their hind-foot wore heels on a regular basis. 

3. Moisturize Your Feet 

When applying moisturizer before you go to bed, don’t forget to give some love to your feet. 

As we age, the skin on our feet tends to get thinner and drier. This can cause cracks, bleeding, and calloused feet, which is both unsightly and uncomfortable. 

To keep your skin soft, apply a thick moisturizing cream to your feet every night or after you get out of the shower. You may even want to choose a moisturizer that’s specially formulated for feet. 

However, avoid applying moisturizer to the cracks between your toes, as this can lead to infection. 

4. Trim Your Toenails Properly

Long toenails aren’t just unsightly, they can also lead to serious health problems. 

If you don’t keep up with trimming, it can lead to ingrown toenails, which in turn can lead to infections and other huge problems. 

Use a clipper or scissors to cut straight across your toenail, and then file them to curve out the sides. If you curve your nails with a clipper, it can lead to your nails growing into your skin, so avoid doing this. 

When trimming your toes, don’t forget about the rest of your feet. You can use a sandpaper disc, pumice stone, or other product to file away the dead skin and callouses from your feet. 

5. Maintain a Healthy Weight

Being overweight puts greater force on your feet with each step you take. It can also put you at an increased risk for conditions like arthritis, diabetes, and poor blood circulation. 

If you struggle to maintain a healthy weight, talk to your doctor about getting on a safe weight loss program.

6. Get Pedicures 

Many people see pedicures as an unnecessary luxury. However, pedicures are great for anyone – woman or man- who wants to improve the health and appearance of their feet. 

Pedicures involve a lot more than just painting on a pretty coat of polish. During a pedicure, you’ll have your feet scrubbed, massaged, and moisturized. Your esthetician will also trim and file your toenails.

7. Wear Proper Support 

For many people, wearing a comfortable pair of shoes is all the support they need. However, if you have issues with your feet, you may need additional support. 

For example, if you frequently suffer from heel blisters, you may want to wear a gel pad on your heels. Or, if you suffer from foot pain, you may want to wear a brace that helps with pain relief. Or, if you suffer from poor circulation, you may want to buy compression socks. 

8. Stretch Your Feet 

Last but not least, don’t forget to give your feet a good stretch every once in a while. 

Stretching can both help and prevent foot pain, so try to add some foot stretches to your stretching routine. 

You should also stretch your Achilles heel, as this is another area of the foot that is commonly injured.
